Why do you see? (2021)

Why do you see? is an oil on canvas painting that references Western painting's historically masculine gaze and its presentation/positioning of the female body. By removing a figure from the painted context, the positions leave a space that allows interpretation and stereotyping to take place. Why do you see? refuses to provide a visual context or explicit gendered identification, forcing viewers to consider their own gaze and presuppositions about the body when it is both present and absent within a painted context.
