ego (2019)

ego is a chain of stuffed felt letters hung from a doll stand and illuminated from below to create a larger representation of itself. Although this representation is a false one, it is the most dominant. Toxic-masculine culture creates a pressure for people of all genders/identities to reject stereotypically "feminine" traits in favour of stereotypically "masculine" traits, creating a false representation of an ego that harms society en masse. The mixed elements of ego (softness, fragility, size, physicality, illusion, etc.) and their gendered associations challenge how these traits are valued and represented in a culture where some are favourable and others are shameful. When illuminated, ego emphasizes that grandiosity and hierarchy are constructed.
